Biography

b. 11-Nov 1970, Manila, Philippines

Born Ricardo Jose Romero Reyes III, Rico Reyes, grew up in the projects of Quezon City and the suburbs of Manila. In 1981, he left the Philippines for Barbados where he and his family lived as one of three Filipino families on the Caribbean island.

In 1982, Rico found himself transplanted in the Central Valley of California where he spent most of his adolescence. He cultivated his love of art by spending hours in the public library looking at art books and participating in the Manteca Camera Club. Rico later attended UC Berkeley and received his bachelor’s degree (BA) in sculpture Dec 1993.

Rico Reyes graduated from UCLA in 1997 with a master's in fine arts specializing in "New Genres". He was active as a graduate student instructor and a member of the Executive Board of the School of the Arts and Architecture and Academic Senate Committee on Faculty Welfare. In 1998, he installed his first one-person show at Puro Arte Gallery and Performance Space in Los Angeles and Third Space Gallery in Quezon City, Philippines.

Rico Reyes participated as a guest curator for the Fowler Museum of Cultural History at UCLA examining 100 years of Philippine-US relations through photography.  He returned to Northern California to coordinate the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance Community Arts Project Visual Art Committee and in 2000, launched “Post-Gay/Ante-Asian” an online exhibit and publication.  In 2001, Rico returned to the Central Valley where he worked at the Haggin Museum as Assistant Curator of Education.  He took the position of director/curator at the Reynolds Gallery in Stockton, CA in 2002 until 2005.

On his latest collaboration with artist, Johanna Poethig and musician, Lily-Anne Perez, the trio formed a performance group, Barrionics, a lively amalgamation of electronic music, folk song and dance with performance art. Rico is also engaged in individual projects creating art objects and video installations.

Since September 2007, Rico resides in London, UK to earn his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
