You Got This (...Because everyone Can Use A Little Self-Affirmation)

Missy Weimer addresses highly personal contemporary issues - Google, affirmation, social interaction. Her latest work, "You Got This," a small collection of small engraved personal found objects address the feminine need for self affirmation and approval. We love this new work.

Note from the artist:

I bought this little thrift store mirror and wanted to etch it with text. I thought of it as a live-action version of my Sentiments pieces, in which one can read the text or see the image (but not both at once). In the case of a mirror, the image is the reflection of the viewer. This presence and also the small scale of the mirror, make the experience intimate. I wanted the message to be positive and supportive. Unspecific, yet personal. Something to invert or supersede the utility and vanity associated with a mirror. In light of that, 'You got this' was the obvious choice for this text. I say it all the time. I say it to my students and athletes, strangers, friends and family. At first if felt like the text would be a message directly from myself to the viewer. However, once it was made I realized that it acts as a message to one's self. From the viewer to the viewer.

Once I made the mirror and documented it (above), I shared the image widely with friends and family. It really seemed to speak to people. Even without the direct interaction with the reflection, the pleasing aesthetics and positive message were eliciting a warm, enthusiastic reaction. In an effort to spread the message further, I have made this limited edition of vintage powder compacts.

The compacts are a perfect vehicle for this message. Discrete and personal, this found object carries history with it. Its very existence allows for the time to powder ones nose. A time to regroup, to reflect and pause. One can slip the compact out and  read the text, a mantra, then look for one's self within the text. Putting one's self literally into the message. You Got This.

This transference from left brain (reading text) to right brain (recognizing faces) has been shown to help the brain more completely process stress from past trauma or current and future anxieties in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) treatment. It is a grand hope that the You Got This compact, though not a proven clinical process, can work to alleviate stress for its owner/viewer/participant. An opening into a self assuring world were, “You GOT This.” Because you do.
