Bio: Laura Donefer

Laura Donefer (born in Ithaca, New York, raised in Quebec, Canada) has been using glass as her primary medium of artistic expression for more than thirty years, often in combination with diverse materials. She studied sculpture at the National Art School of Cubanacan (1973, Havana). In 1979, she graduated with honours from McGill University (Montreal). She traveled the world and worked with many interesting people before training as a glass artist at Sheridan College School of Craft and Design, where she graduated in 1985.

Known for innovative, colorful blown glass and flame worked “Amulet Baskets,” Ms. Donefer’s work pushes boundaries, exploring ideas concerning memory, assault, bereavement, joy and madness. While creating work is extremely important, so is teaching. She taught at Sheridan College and Espace Verre in Montreal for over 25 years, and has a strong following for her teachings at Pilchuck, Penland, Corning, Red Deer. She continues to conduct workshops in schools throughout North America, Japan, and Australia.

President of the Glass Art Association of Canada, Ms. Donefer united glass artists across Canada and began publishing a quarterly magazine that became the voice of the Canadian glass artist today. She keeps to a busy exhibition schedule, presenting work internationally since 1985. Her professional resume includes exhibitions at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art (Japan), the Museo del Vidrio (Mexico), the Museum of Fine Art (Montreal), and the Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai). Her work is included in collections of the Corning Museum of Glass (New York), the Museum of Art & Design (New York), and the Museum of Fine Art (Quebec City). Among others, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Glass Art Association of Canada, the Honorary Membership Award from the Glass Art Society and the International Flame Working award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Glass Art World. Notorious for organizing wacky GLASS FASHION SHOWS, she presents the next one at the Corning Museum of Glass in 2016.

Laura Donefer lives near Harrowsmith, in the wilds of Ontario, Canada, where, in her spare time, she grows kale, hangs out with her dachshund, and kayaks the nearby waterways.
